A Message from Mrs. Rebecca Polyakovsky - Spring Production is here!
Next week-Thursday, May 27th, to be specific-the Drama Class is performing Tom Stoppard's The Fifteen Minute Hamlet (together with the Drama Club's production of This Is a Test). In preparation for this, the Drama Class concluded last quarter by reading Shakespeare's (full length version) of Hamlet, and then began rehearsing the play right after Pesach. They are having a great deal of fun; they are also working very hard. Their lines are (mostly) learned and I am pleased to say, they have come to understand that learning your lines is only the beginning of performance readiness. Only a few weeks ago, they balked at being asked to come in on a Sunday for some extra rehearsal time that I knew would be needed five days before the play. This week, they asked for an extra rehearsal on Tuesday, their day off from school. Although not everybody was able to make it in, more than half of the class came in on their day off and rehearsed for three hours! They have also requested that I extend our rehearsal this Sunday by an extra hour. They are committed. As a class, they are learning about the rehearsal process, stage combat, stage directions, character choices, and how to make sense of Shakespeare's text. More importantly, they are learning the lessons of commitment-of putting in the time, energy and effort necessary to achieve your goals. This is one of the most transferable of all skills or lessons learned from Drama. I am very proud of these students and am excited to see how much further our show-and their commitment, confidence and cooperation-grow between now and next Thursday. Please come see the show! Support the hard work and commitment of the Drama Class and the Drama Club...and enjoy an evening of fun with us!

NYHS Student Wins 3rd Place in State Holocaust Writing Contest
Adira Reback (9th grade) won 3rd place in the high school division (grades 9 through 12) in the 2010 Jacob Friedman Holocaust Writing Contest. 750 students, representing 67 schools, participated in the writing and art contest this year. All NYHS ninth graders entered essays in the contest through Mrs. Hess' LA I class. The topic was "How would your life be different if people were more respectful and tolerant of each other's differences? How does change begin with you?" Adira will be honored May 23rd, along with the other contest winners, at a luncheon sponsored by the Washington State Holocaust Education Resource Center.
Congratulations, Adira. We are proud of you!
