From Richard Fruchter, President and CEO of the Jewish Federation
The Northwest Yeshiva High School girls basketball team, after winning two difficult games at districts, has achieved a State tournament berth - the first for any Jewish school in Washington State. Mazel Tov!
This story, however, has a spiritual side that includes a teachable moment. Their consolation game in Yakima was scheduled to be played on the same date as the Fast of Esther, just before Purim. After negiotiating unsuccessfully for a date change with the WIAA, they chose not to compete. Though these girls come from varied Jewish backgrounds, they made a decision based on a common respect for our traditions and values. We are proud of the way they handled this difficult situation. They taught all of us the importance of a commitment to spiritual values is not always convenient. They are not only fine examples for girl and boy athletes but for all Washington State citizens.

D'var Torah On Tetzaveh by Jason Cohen 2012

The opening line of Tetzaveh, "And you, Command the Children of Israel..." is directed towards Moshe but however his name is not mentioned not here or anywhere else in this portion. This happens to be the only portion of which Moshe's name is missing from the text. This is even more ironic because on the 7th of Adar, the Yahrzeit for Moshe, is this week and my question is why would they not include his name?
According to Rabbi Macy Gordon, this absence represents the void in Moshe's life. If you look in the Torah, Moshe was raised among strangers and his family was barely mentioned. He fled his birthplace for killing a man in justice but was looked at as a fugitive. This most modest man did not look for this power, but it was thrust upon him by Hashem.
Normally, one of such great stature would look for his children to follow on in his ways or for his family to be praised and for people to be recognized and honored as descendants of Moshe. Has is it ever been heard of being a descendant of Moshe? No, but even more ironic, is that Aharon's (Moshe's Brother) bloodline of descendants are widely known and praised amongst Judaism.
The worst part of this all, is that Moshe was denied entrance to Israel. Israel was the reward, the goal, the dream he worked for and no matter how much he pleaded, his entrance was denied. "Moshe, who transmitted the mitzvot, all Jewish values, to a people for all generations, was denied the opportunity to actually fulfill any of the many mitzvot which apply only in the Land of Israel, foremost among which is that of actually taking possession of the Land of Israel, living there, and settling the Land." said Rabbi Macy Gordon.
The question we can take away from this is, if Moshe lived and worked his whole life to enter and just see the land of Israel should we not make an effort to make Aliyah or even visit? 120 years of life was spent on bringing our people to this land so we could have what Hashem promised us.
Being Jewish, is to follow Hashem's Laws and commandments and to serve him to the best of our ability, and if that's true than Israel should take up a huge part in our lives. Being Jewish without Israel is like living without water.
