D'var Torah By Adira Reback 2013
Parsha Vayikra

In this week's parsha, Vayikra, G-d gives Moshe explicit details about the several types of korbanot, sacrifices, which Bnei Israel can make. There are the burnt offerings, meal offerings, and peace offerings, which were considered gifts to G-d because of the Jews' desire to give. There are also the obligated korbanot, the sin offerings, to give Bnei Israel an opportunity to do teshuvah and atone for their sins.
With all of these explanations concerning several types of korbanot, we wonder, what is the real reason why the Jews made korbanot? The Radak, a commentator, gives an answer in the book of Jeremiah, chapter seven, phrase twenty-two. He begins to explain by stating that in the Ten Commandments, there is no command to make korbanot. Although the Jews were not commanded, korbanot were simply allowed if one wanted to give a sacrifice, so the practice comes across as somewhat unimportant. Only public korbanot sacrifices were obligated for the glory of the Beit Hamikdash. The sin offering's purpose was to allow one to do teshuvah, but the korban itself was merely the method that helped them do teshuvah.
Another point made by the Radak agrees with a similar explanation by Rambam, another commentator. He states that korbanot were the essential practice of avoda zara, idol worship. The Jews struggled with idol worship; it was their greatest temptation that took them away from the path of G-d. By doing korbanot through Halacha, Bnei Israel was able to rid them selves from a bad practice, and turn it into a way to glorify their true G-d. G-d gave such a detailed process showing precisely how each korban should be made, in order so that mind could be focused on the Halachic aspect of the korban, and so it could be distinguished from their past korbanot to the idols. The Bnei Israel had a wild energy, which we saw a few weeks ago in parsha Ki-Tisa, when the Jews made the golden calf and displayed craziness and excitement over the idol. Through making korbanot the correct way, to G-d, they were able to focus this wild energy from the korbanot toward the actual wisdom of Halacha. In simple words, the sacrifices to G-d were a way for the Jews to guide themselves away from the evil practice of idol worship, which included sacrifices to the idols, and correctly make korbanot to G-d, which would eventually teach them the wisdom of Halacha and the impropriety of their old practices.
