Magda Schaloum Visits NYHS
Holocaust survivor Magda Schaloum visited NYHS this week to share her story as a Holocaust survivor with our students.
Magda Schaloum speaks out on behalf of all Holocaust survivors and their families. Born and raised in Hungary, she endured acts of antisemitism throughout her childhood, and in 1944 and 1945 Magda was sent to several concentration camps. She lost both her parents and her brother.
Magda met her husband, Isaac Schaloum, in a Displaced Persons Camp in Germany. Isaac was from Salonika, Greece. They emigrated to Seattle in 1950, where Isaac became a tailor and businessman, and they raised three children. Magda is a longtime friend and supporter of NYHS and the grandmother of NYHS alumni!
Although of Hungarian descent, Magda became an active and beloved member of Seattle's Sephardic community. She volunteers for many Jewish organizations, including the Washington State Holocaust Education Resource Center, and continues to bear witness to the horrors of hatred and antisemitism.

Need volunteer or in-school community service hours?
The Spring Production needs you!
You don't have to be on stage to be a part of the Play! Much is needed to support the actors and director for a successful production. This is where YOU come in! Please support the NYHS Drama department: Become a Drama Booster! This is a great way to get your volunteer hours or in-school community service hours for the year and to help us put on a great show!
If you are interested in helping out with the Spring Production and becoming a NYHS Drama Booster, please come to a meeting after school (4pm) on Monday, April 19th. If you are interested, but unable to attend the Monday meeting, please contact Mrs. Polyakovsky at rpolyakovsky@nyhs.net or (206) 618-2170.

Are our kids vulnerable?
What protects them from the typical risks that come with growing up?
The answers may surprise you!

Sophomores Visit Washington DC Next Week
With great anticipation, 16 NYHS Sophomores and three chaperones (Mr. Kaufman, Ariella DeFunis and Rabbi Owen) are preparing for next week's five day trip to our nation's capital. The program's itinerary is jam-packed. Highlights of the trip include visits to the new US Capitol Visitors Center and the House Gallery, the Holocaust Museum, the White House tour, Old Alexandria, Arlington Cemetery, and The Mall. We have also scheduled a meeting with Senator Maria Cantwell. Meals will be provided by Eli's Restaurant - a well-known kosher restaurant in the DC area (Dupont Circle).
