Magda Schaloum Visits NYHS

Holocaust survivor Magda Schaloum visited NYHS this week to share her story as a Holocaust survivor with our students.

Magda Schaloum speaks out on behalf of all Holocaust survivors and their families. Born and raised in Hungary, she endured acts of antisemitism throughout her childhood, and in 1944 and 1945 Magda was sent to several concentration camps. She lost both her parents and her brother.

Magda met her husband, Isaac Schaloum, in a Displaced Persons Camp in Germany. Isaac was from Salonika, Greece. They emigrated to Seattle in 1950, where Isaac became a tailor and businessman, and they raised three children. Magda is a longtime friend and supporter of NYHS and the grandmother of NYHS alumni!

Although of Hungarian descent, Magda became an active and beloved member of Seattle's Sephardic community. She volunteers for many Jewish organizations, including the Washington State Holocaust Education Resource Center, and continues to bear witness to the horrors of hatred and antisemitism.

Noah Alper, serial entrepreneur and founder of Noah's Bagels and Bread and Circus, on campus this week!
Become A Fan on Facebook
Noah Alper has just published a book, Business Mensch, Timeless Wisdom for Today's Entrepreneurs. He offers business advice from a Jewish ethical perspective.

Noah Alper with Students

Noah spoke to NYHS supporters at our Annual Meeting and shared his personal journey to greater Jewish observance and of lessons learned through his many business ventures and life experiences. NYHS students also had the opportunity to hear Noah speak and ask this 'serial entrepreneur' many questions on Thursday!

'Why did you name your bagel company after yourself?'

"How was it to work with kashrut organizations when you owned Noah's?"

"Why did you decide to make Noah's kosher?  Why did you do on Shabbat or Pesach?"

"What do you need to do or  know to be an entrepreneur?"

If you would like to find out the answers to these questions and more, order your signed copy of Noah Alper's book, Business Menschby clicking here here!

From the Drama Department

SAVE THE DATE

NYHS Drama Department's Spring Production
7pm Thursday, May 27th
at The Erickson Theatre Off Broadway
1524 Harvard Ave, Seattle, WA 98122

On Thursday, May 27th, the Drama department will put on two one act plays: Tom Stoppard's The Fifteen Minute Hamlet and Stephen Gregg's This Is a Test. This is a joint production of the Drama Club and Mrs. Polyakovsky's Drama class.

Need volunteer or in-school community service hours?

 The Spring Production needs you!

You don't have to be on stage to be a part of the Play! Much is needed to support the actors and director for a successful production. This is where YOU come in! Please support the NYHS Drama department: Become a Drama Booster! This is a great way to get your volunteer hours or in-school community service hours for the year and to help us put on a great show!

If you are interested in helping out with the Spring Production and becoming a NYHS Drama Booster, please come to a meeting after school (4pm) on Monday, April 19th. If you are interested, but unable to attend the Monday meeting, please contact Mrs. Polyakovsky at rpolyakovsky@nyhs.net or (206) 618-2170.

Helping Our Children Succeed
A Conversation about Strengths and Risks in our Community

Is our community at risk?
Are our kids vulnerable?

What protects them from the typical risks that come with growing up?

The answers may surprise you!

Join us in a conversation about the assets we can develop and utilize in our children and community.
Research on "developmental assets" will be shared, in particular relation to preventing substance abuse.

We'll also cover some current concerns and trends in substance abuse among teens.

This highly interactive discussion will provide a framework to help your child succeed, drawing on your values, traditions and community resources.
For parents, grandparents and others in the community working with students.
