Davar Torah
by Marissa Almoslino 2013

In the first pasuk of Parshat Acharei-Kedoshim, Hashem speaks to Moshe after Aaron's two sons had died when they drew near before G-d. The literal translation is "And the Lord spoke to Moses after the death of Aaron's two sons, when they drew near before the Lord, and they died."
Rashi comments on this pasuk:
And the Lord spoke to Moses after the death of Aaron's two sons: What does this teach us [when it specifies "after the death of Aaron's two sons"]? Rabbi Eleazar ben Azariah illustrated [the answer] with a parable of a patient, whom a physician came to visit. [The physician] said to him, "Do not eat cold foods, and do not lie down in a cold, damp place." Then, another [physician] visited him, and advised him, "Do not eat cold foods or lie down in a cold, damp place, so that you will not die the way so-and-so died." This one warned that patient more effectively than the former one had. Therefore, our scripture says, "after the death of Aaron's two sons" [i.e., God effectively said to Aaron, "Do not enter the Holy in a prohibited manner, so that you will not die as your sons died"]- [Torath Kohanim 16:3]
This teaches us that Hashem is always looking out for our best interest. Even though Aaron's son attempted to come close to G-d when they were not instructed to and they died, Hashem still tells Aaron not to make the same mistake. He is looking out for Aaron's best interest. He does the same with us, yet we don't always take the hint. We must learn to be more like Aaron and listen to the little clues and hints. It will take a long time of practice, but if we stay at it we will be able to accomplish our goal.

NYHS Sophomores Return from week-long visit to Washington DC
This past Sunday, 16 NYHS Sophomores and 3 brave chaperones (Mr. Kaufman, Ariella DeFunis and Rabbi Owen) traveled to Washington DC (and all returned on Thursday intact).
The trip had two goals.
The first goal was for the students to experience Washington DC as a part of the 10th grade American Government class. We certainly accomplished this goal. The students sat in the US Senate Gallery while Senators Harry Reid and Mitch McConnell spoke from the floor about banking reform. The students met with Senator Maria Cantwell for 20 minutes to thank her for her continued support of Israel and to discuss her thoughts on health care reform and banking reform. They took a tour of The White House. They saw the original US Constitution, Declaration of Independence and Bill of Rights at the National Archives. They visited Arlington National Cemetery, Washington and Lincoln Memorials.
The second goal was for the students to have a Jewish experience in Washington DC. We experienced the intensity of the US Holocaust Museum. The students prayed in a synagogue - Kesher Israel - in Georgetown followed by a discussion of our reflections on the Holocaust Museum. We ate at Eli's Restaurant, an excellent kosher restaurant near Dupont Circle (where we saw Wolf and Gigi Kohn and family). We even had a Jewish experience in the Senate gallery. One of our male students was wearing a hat which the Senate page asked him to remove. When the page saw that he did not have a head covering with which to replace his hat, she offered him a white kippah!
Watch for testimonials and a lot of photos from our students about their experience in the upcoming weeks.

Sophomores - send us your thoughts and photos for next week!

Need volunteer or in-school community service hours?
The Spring Production needs you!
You don't have to be on stage to be a part of the Play! Much is needed to support the actors and director for a successful production. This is where YOU come in! Please support the NYHS Drama department: Become a Drama Booster! This is a great way to get your volunteer hours or in-school community service hours for the year and to help us put on a great show!
If you are interested in helping out with the Spring Production and becoming a NYHS Drama Booster, please come to a meeting after school (4pm) on Monday, April 19th. If you are interested, but unable to attend the Monday meeting, please contact Mrs. Polyakovsky at rpolyakovsky@nyhs.net or (206) 618-2170.
